Grilling on outdoor electric grills can be a very rewarding and flavorful experience if you practice a little patience and "get to know" your grill. If you have an electric grill, chances are it wasn't your first choice. Many people find themselves in the market after moving into a condo or apartment only to learn that the open flames on their traditional charcoal or gas grills are not allowed. Most would agree that totally giving up on patio grilling is not an option, so the only other thing to do is purchase an electric grill. The good news is that manufactures have seen the need for an alternative and stepped up to provide a solution.
Electric grills have been used in the home for years, but a good solution for the outdoors did not exist until recently. Several companies offer products that are not only compliant with apartment and condo regulations, but also do a wonderful job cooking your favorite foods. The first generation of these grills were not very good, but the newest models are vastly improved. If you do a little bit of research before you buy, you should not have a problem finding the perfect solution to your grilling needs.
There are several advantages that an outdoor electric grill offers over a traditional gas or charcoal grill. You will never need to drag a heavy bag of charcoal home and spend time trying to get a fire going, or run out of propane in the middle of your cookout. As long as you have access to a 110 volt power outlet, you will always have a heat source. Another advantage is the very easy cleanup. If you do not enjoy the time that it takes to scrub a traditional grill, an electric grill may be right up your alley. Most are designed to be easily cleaned by simply removing the internal parts and washing in the kitchen sink.
Lack of flavor is the one disadvantage that some people seem to notice with an outdoor electric grill. I have used several different models from several manufactures and have always enjoyed the taste of the food. Your results will probably depend on what type of grilling you are trying to accomplish. If you are cooking a steak, chop, or sausage on high heat, the results should be fine. Those that are cooking traditional bar-b-que on low heat for a long period of time will probably not get the results they were looking for.
Most retailers that sell outdoor electric grills will let you return it if you are not happy with your purchase, so don't be afraid to try one out.
